A blaze of colour

Else Streifer-Schröck exhibits at the town hall until 5 July. Her pour technique is famous.

The foyer of Gauting town hall was packed for the opening of Bis hierhin (“So far”), the retrospective Else had planned for her 80th birthday before the pandemic pushed it back. Among the works: the large-format pour painting Lichter Sommer, charcoal drawings from 1998 and her flower watercolours.

The article recalls that Else only began her studies at 42, at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich under Professor Jürgen Reipka, graduating as a master student in 1990, and that one of her pour paintings was bought by the Bavarian State Painting Collections while she was still a student. Mayor Dr. Brigitte Kössinger told the guests: “Your colourful paintings speak to us. They draw us in with their strength.”

“I love flowers, their colours and the lightness of their petals.”

Emotions from black charcoal

A feature on Else's charcoal drawings in the Starnberg edition of Germany's leading daily.

Alongside the pour paintings she is known for, Else has drawn in charcoal for decades: figures and movement, set down in a few confident strokes. The Süddeutsche Zeitung dedicated a full article to this side of her work.

What the critics say

Five voices from exhibition openings and reviews, 1997 to 2014. Translated from the German; the original text is under each quote.

“It seems almost like magic to me, with what certainty lines, fields of colour, flows of colour, dabs of colour and colour temperatures separate from one another and join again. The marks and colours are not copied from nature. Else transforms her experiences of nature, emotionally and with temperament, into independent, dynamic signs and symbols that resurface from deep within her. In this way she conjures a sense of space onto the large format: a space that seems to stretch on beyond the edges of the canvas. We get the impression that the pictures are only small excerpts of one vast expanse of water, landscape, flowers and meadow. Else achieves this power, this magic, by doing without composition and using her colours as if the format had always been too small for them. The colours seem to want to flow out past the edge of the picture.”

“The works are marked on the one hand by a strong aesthetic component, yet on the other they reach out of the picture and into the room with intense vibration and equally intense colour. Spraying water flows, ice melts, water in all its forms carries a thousandfold reflections, the swell of dunes sways together. Plants display their hugely enlarged blossoms, bursting with glowing red or orange. Here pouring and brushwork combine with temperament. Then comes the turn towards abstraction. Bands of stripes appear, vertical or horizontal. Light underlayers glow through streets of colour formed from thin rivulets of paint or ‘beams’ applied with the brush. Here, too, the combination of colours is very aesthetic. The dynamism has now been transformed towards stillness. But in the depths it is surely still seething.”

“Else Streifer-Schröck is at home in every pictorial medium. While the artist works quite figuratively in earlier pieces, and in works in other techniques, here the conventional way of painting is abandoned to create every condition for free expression on the surface of the picture. With these paintings Else Streifer-Schröck opens up a new reality. But which? It can only be the subjective perception of what acts upon her. The sum of these perceptions forms her horizon of experience, her highly personal reality. The painter works in her studio in the old Reismühle on the Würm near Gauting, in the midst of nature, and that is where she draws her strength. Her artistic themes arise as if by themselves. ‘I seek and I find.’ The result is examined and must hold its own; only then do some of the works receive a title.”

Dr. Margit Lurz · 2003

“While the painter has, to this day, remained entirely bound to the subject in her works on paper, the oils and acrylics of recent years have been marked by an extensive or even complete abstraction. This was no doubt due in part to the special technique developed by Else Streifer-Schröck: pouring the paint onto the canvas, or letting it run, in several layers one over the other, is a deliberate and to that extent controlled process, yet at the same time an artistic process substantially governed by chance, one that excludes the subject. The pictures that emerged from this process sprang entirely from movement; they were pure explosions of colour and immediate emotional expression.”

Dr. Ulrike Camilla Gartner · 2001

“Trying to assign the pictures of the painter Else Streifer-Schröck to any category whatsoever would be more than difficult, if not impossible. She is one of the few painters on the art scene who manages, with an almost sleepwalking certainty, to wander back and forth between abstraction and reality, or to join these apparent opposites into a harmonious whole. Whatever subject she turns to, be it motifs from nature or nudes, Else Streifer-Schröck achieves the balancing act between the most diverse means of expression time and again.”

Dr. Elisabeth Sommer · 1997
